Activity Therapist Associaton of Illinois

The Activity Therapists Association's education programs focus on the theory and practice of designing and providing Activities, Therapeutic Recreation, and Psychosocial interventions to enhance the functional abilities, self-esteem and quality of life for individuals within long term care, assisted living, retirement, hospital based SNF units and/or adult day services settings. The ATA is dedicated to promoting the vital importance of Activity Therapy and in maintaining and improving the physical, mental and emotional well-being of persons across the health care continuum.

ELDERGIVERS began, in 1985, as a faith-based effort to respond to a surprising statistic: More than 60% of nursing home residents never have a visitor. The Episcopal Church of St. Mary the Virgin in the Cow Hollow neighborhood of San Francisco gathered several of its members, trained them and started the Volunteer Visitor Program. This was the core of what has become a multi-faceted organization dedicated to fostering positive connections between elders and the wider community.

In May 1989 Cathy Nicolay, Activity Coordinator from Pines Lodge and Parkvale Lodge in the Piper Creek Foundation wrote a letter inviting Activity Coordinators to join her for a day of Program Sharing. The first meeting took place on Monday, September 18th 1989 at the Great West Inn in Red Deer. The itinerary included “A Get to Know You” session, brainstorming to find new ways to deal with problems, activity idea sharing and activity demonstrations. On the tenth anniversary Cathy was invited back as a special guest to see what her letter had produced in the end. Cathy was quite pleased.
